The date of the fishing trip:

November 2021

Location:

Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada

Target Fish:

Rainbow Trout

Fishing Style:

Freshwater, Spinning, Barbless, Area Style Trout lures and gear

Tackle Information:

The fishing pressure is higher than ever in my area. Without annual or bi-annual planting of fresh stock, the fish held over from the last few seasons have pretty much seen it all.

Coming up on December, the ice is now showing every morning in thin layers until the sun breaks; and the Trout are more lethargic than ever. Most have found their winter holes and have been hovering, fairy inactive, along the edges of weed beds and hunkered down in structure (wood piles, stumps, rock piles).

This time of year excites me the most. By no means are the bites easy. Every skill you have is bound to be tested and used in a revolving cycle of presentation changes. Choosing the proper gear becomes CRUCIAL to your success, and I cannot stress enough the importance of LINE SELECTION.

VARIVAS Ajing Master BLUE MOON Fluorocarbon, Gou #0.4  / 1.7 lb
With the heavy, changing winds that fall brings during the day, combined with the trout holding in the mid/bottom water column, having a sensitive sinking line with just a small amount of stretch has been key to my bottom spooning success. The 1.77 specific gravity of  VARIVAS’s Blue Moon fluorocarbon line helps me cut through wind during cast. When the line hits the water it sinks fairly quickly, giving me direct lure contact through choppy surface conditions–a total advantage of increased sensitivity in the tough conditions. The blue line color helps me keep visual contact so I can maintain proper tension and see small strikes in the way my line bends/straightens.

VARIVAS Area Super Trout, ES2 Esterline in natural clear, Gou #0.25 / 1.45 lb
with Gou#0.5 / 2.5 lb Area Super Trout VSP Fluoro shock leader
The ability to precisely and effectively cover the water column you are focusing brings a lot of factors into play for success. When focusing my techniques on the middle column, my favorite line to use is Ester (polyester).  More specifically the ES2 Esterline. The balance of hard sensitivity and soft movement keeps proving its versatility. One of my favorite ways to grab bites when it’s the toughest is to use micro cranks. To really crank up the sensitivity, I use ES2 #0.25 / 1.45 lb,  together with a longer leader of around 30 inches of VSP fluoro shock leader, combined with my 61 ml Undead Factory rod and a 19 Vanquish 1000ssspg.   SLOWWWW and DEADLY is the name of the game!

The thin diameter of the ES2 line provides a ton of castability; and the VSP fluoro shock leader, a little more power for the strike. The softer tip of the ML rod helps absorb the head shakes and the hardness of the rod’s power section, providing instant control, managing the polyester perfectly, giving me all the power I need from the line and the necessary softness required to caress the lack of line stretch.

It’s the perfect balance of STRENGTH and finesse!  And it’s what truly separates VARIVAS from all other lines in this vast market of confusion. Line selections to cover your day on the water, no matter what you are targeting.

Trusted for years in my game, without a doubt, VARIVAS has been there, and has been a major factor in all our success over the years. The future is looking good for us, U.S. anglers. The arrival of VARIVAS America has completely changed the game and it doesn’t stop!  They are always improving and growing and expanding their product development, bringing us anglers the premium gear we need.  I always have and always will use VARIVAS lines.
