I love the fall season in New York. While many are glued to foliage reports, looking for peak color change, I’m checking weather reports and studying USGS water data. Cooler weather and some rain means one thing for me: landlocked Atlantic salmon and Brown trout. It’s the time of year where I get to fish for trophy, lake-run salmonids in small, Finger Lakes tributaries.
With numbers of salmon and trout moving upstream, fishing pressure can get quite intense. These fish run a gauntlet of all types of anglers having everything thrown at them. I like to approach these small tributaries just like I would for mountain streams. Pinpoint casting under branches, around rocks, and along current seams is the recipe for success in such highly pressured, close quarter conditions.
Bait Finesse System (BFS) is perfect for this type of fishing. My first catch this fall was everything I could hope for. I was able to net a landlocked Atlantic salmon with a mutant jaw. Hype, for days. It took a lure presented right down the middle of a foam line, along a drop-off. Prime territory. It was one of those moments where I just had a good feeling. It’s what I look forward to this time of year. Did I mention that I love the fall?
