When it comes to the fishing line, not all companies create it equally or specify its size uniformly. 

There are more than 70+ companies manufacture fishing line in Japan alone, not to mention other countries.

JAFS Standard Size

VARIVAS, like many Japanese fishing tackle manufacturers, has adapted the universal industrial standard called JAFS standard for Japanese fishing line size (diameter) to promote fair, transparent, and high-quality products for consumers.

Should you trust the number on the package?

In Japan, fishing line diameter, gauge/number, is referred to as “号” (pronounced and written in Latin/English script conversion as “Go/Goh/Gou”). However, “号” as a suffix, simply means “number,” along with other meanings in Japanese. It does not follow any universal conversion standard except in the case of terms agreed upon by the member of JAFTMA (Japan Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association) and its specific JAFS size specification.

If a manufacturer is not a member of JAFTMA they may or may not follow the rule specified. 

With VARIVAS products, you can always trust the markings including the size, diameter of the line and weight capacity.

Note:

Please be advised that the “mm/inch” diameter size is approximate. Due to the “braided/stranded” and uneven nature of the PE line, the actual diameter may vary on the line where it is measured and by manufacturers. JAFS specification only indicates “denier” which is the density of yarn/fiber.
