Fly-fishing for winter steelhead is a tough game. It’s certainly not for everyone. Winter steelhead have been called the fish of a thousand casts. The odds are against you. You’re casting big, two-handed rods all day. It’s often very cold and very wet. Sometimes you get nothing at all; sometimes just a “pull.”

In such conditions, you need every small advantage you can get. Winter steelheaders obsess over their tackle, lines, knots and other details because in three days of fishing, you might get one chance! One chance at a beautiful, fresh-from-the-ocean powerhouse. I switched to VARIVAS Airs Shooting because it improves my odds.

AIRS is light, shoots well and long in the cold and wet conditions, and does not transfer much water to my hands. It mends extremely well with the double-handed rods we use. Almost all of my fishing buddies have switched to it as well. It’s a great tool with which to swing beautiful flies to beautiful, sea-run fish.
